Off to the park we went with the flying ring. At first we stood very close to each other to get the hang of the ring. Than my son, age 13 wanted to give it a try to see just how far he could throw this ring. Well, what this ring claims to do, it does deliver. It just flew and flew and flew. I am very impressed. After a while, we had a small audience watching us with this amazing ring. Low and behold, it was easier than throwing a Frisbee. Pretty good way to get a workout in with your kids.

Mission accomplished!

I’m mourning the demise of my beloved Phil&Teds stroller. After countless inner tube replacements followed by almost instant deflations it was finally pronounced kaput last week after five years of hard running. When I say ‘running’ let me be clear that I have never jogged with it. Me? Jog? Bwah-ha-ha. But we have used its all terrain capabilities to great extent: from the snow covered slopes of Whistler to the endless sandy beaches of Parksville; from the rugged cliff tops of Vancouver Island’s West Coast to three exhausting days at Disneyland; not to mention innumerable circuits of Stanley Park seawall and bi-weekly grocery runs (what was the recommended load limit I wonder?) I’m kicking myself for not putting a milometer on it from day one as I’d be fascinated to know its mileage. It’s true, we didn’t service it regularly and have let its tires wear down to the bare bones which is probably why the horse-chestnut cases and overgrown brambly hedgerow on route to school (please take note Surrey County Council) finally proved too much for it. It will be sorely missed.

And I’m annoyed too, because I wanted to get through this whole child rearing business and be able to boast that I only ever had one stroller. This far in with kidlet #2 approaching age two and absolutely no intention of extending the family further, I was loathe to spend any money on new wheels. So I settled for the cheapest umbrella-stroller Mothercare had to offer which is only slightly more robust than my five-year-old’s doll’s buggy. We rattle along on the school run checking that we still have 4 wheels at every curb. I wonder if it will outlast its six month guarantee.

I was proud of having made the right stroller choice off the bat. Ending up with six strollers by the time your kid is two is easily done. You buy your first, mainly because you like the color, soon find it’s a pain in the butt and buy a replacement – the real trendy one your friend has that looks more like an office chair and you knew you should have opted for in the first place. Then you have a fitness binge and buy a jogging stroller. Oh, wait, a lightweight umbrella-stroller is so handy for those short journeys and occasional bus trips. Jogging didn’t work out so you think maybe you’ll try cycling and buy a trailer stroller. Then just when you think you’re done, you’re expecting again and have to start considering twin buggies.

Obviously the most important feature a stroller should have is a cup holder to safely transport your precious Starbucks, but there are several other important considerations you should weigh up in advance. ‘Stroller Envy’ is a common disorder among new moms. You don’t want to be lugging a heavy boat of a stroller, staring wistfully at leaner, zippier models – wishing you’d got the ‘frog’ instead of being lumbered with the ‘toad’. As soon as you’re out and about with your stroller you’ll spy expectant couples and other stroller-pushing moms looking you up and down critically. They aren’t sizing up your postpartum bod, or admiring your gorgeous baby. They’re checking out your stroller, wondering if it’s the right one for them. Your aim is to be that smug rookie mom who knows she’s picked the right one.

I’d like to share 5 important Survival Secret steps to stroller purchase:

1. Consider your needs -

Adaptability for future family additions; jogging or cycling options.

Weight if you need to lift in and out of a car often or for bus travel.

Size when folded if you travel a lot or haven’t got much room for storage.

Durability if you intend to attack all terrains rather than just the mall.

Features and accessories: like ample storage for hauling groceries; rain and sun covers for all weather outings.

2. Do your research – look around town, ask friends, ask strangers, use the internet.

3. Test Drive – Go to the best stocked shop and put them all through their paces. Consider: weight; maneuverability; handle height for pushing without straining your back; size when collapsed.

4. Bargain hunt –

Are you buying just a basic stroller or does it come with accessories like sunshades and rain covers?

You can get bargain packages on the internet and there’s no problem buying online providing you’ve completed steps 1-3, but be careful shipping and handling don’t add up.

Strollers can get very pricey, but the most expensive may not be the best for you even if you are lucky enough to afford it.

If the expensive model does all the things you want, it may still work out cheaper in the long run than buying four strollers for different purposes.

Consider consignment.

5. Acquire and Enjoy.

~ By Lorraine Regel

Lorraine is the co-Author of “The Survival Guide for Rookie Moms” Published by John Wiley and Sons and due out in bookstores come March 2010. Also visit Lorraine on her website at www.survival4moms.com where she provides humorous, yet relevant articles regarding the first year of motherhood.

As a mother of two I am consistently running here and there dropping off and picking up, arranging play dates, scheduling outings and to boot I signed up to the be the class mom this year. One might wonder how the heck I keep track of every detail and not drop the ball.

I am definitely not a woman of pretense I have no shame in soliciting help from anyone and everyone who will provide it. Therefore, when the folks at BusyBodyBook.com approached me to write a review on their 2009 BusyBodyBook I vehemently agreed!

The book itself is quite funky. It’s definite something that if seen by a fellow mom sitting on the front seat of your car it would stir up conversation. The cover and backing are quite sturdy and definitely held up to being stepped on, thrown around the car and lost a couple of times.

My favorite part of the book is the tips on each page to help you get through your year a little easier….for instance “change the batteries in your smoke detector”….I always forget to change those silly things.

Now for those of you blackberry or iTouch users you will think this way of keeping track of schedules, etc is a bit archaic. However, I find it easy to use and keep track of and the best thing is I don’t have to charge it at the end of each day! Another suggestion would be for those working moms who use your Blackberry for work, you could use the BusyBodyBook for personal appointments and to-do’s.

I would recommend the 2010 BusyBodyBook (www.busybodybook.com) to anyone who loves to make to-do lists and keep track of their appointments. It’s a funky alternative to having post it notes all over the house.
